More Than Words

(Original song by Extreme)

To say that I love you
It’s not the words I feel I hear from You
It’s not that I don’t want to
Hear You say but I already knew
How easy it would be to show me how You feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then You wouldn’t have to say that You love me
‘Cause I’d already know

What would You do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show You feel
That Your love for me is real
What would You say if I took those words away
Then You couldn’t make things new
Just by saying I love you

More than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da

Now that I’ve tried to talk to You to help me understand
All that I have to do is close my eyes
And just reach out my hands and touch You
Hold You close don’t ever let You go
More than words is all I ever needed You to show
Then You wouldn’t have to say that You love me
‘Cause I’d already know

What would You do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show You feel
That Your love for me is real
What would You say if I took those words away
Then You couldn’t make things new
Just by saying I love you

La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
More than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
More than words
La di da, da di da
La di da, da di da, more than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
La di da, da di da, more than words (oh uh uh uh)
More than words

More Than Words – Meaning

Revised by Jeff Divine

(Original song by Extreme)

The original version of “More Than Words” was a song about lovers controlling each other. The songwriter at one point invites his lover to surrender themselves to him completely, but one gets the sense it would be at the lover’s great expense to do so. It is a beautiful song with enormous emphasis on diving deeply into love with reckless abandon, but at the same time makes you feel bad because it is written from the standpoint of a lover’s quarrel and a grasping helplessly for love.

The healed version becomes a song about a relationship between the songwriter and God. It is written from the standpoint of not being able to actually hear God say “I love you”, but the writer understands that God is communicating to him through “more than words.” “More than words” becomes a beautiful statement describing communion with God and God’s Peace. One could even retitle the song now more appropriately to “God’s Peace.”

To say that I love you
It’s not the words I feel I hear from You (I don’t hear God’s Voice speaking the words “I love you”)
It’s not that I don’t want to (I want to hear You say “I love you”)
Hear You say but I already knew
How easy it would be to show me how You feel (Even though I can’t hear you say I love you, I know it’s easy for you to show me how You feel about me.)
More than words is all you have to do to make it real (Your Peace is effortless in showing me how real your love for me is.)
Then You wouldn’t have to say that You love me (Because Your Peace already showed me how you feel)
‘Cause I’d already know (I know your love is real without you having to speak the words “I love you”)

What would You do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show You feel (If I was heartbroken, you would show me You love me by extending Your Peace)
That Your love for me is real
What would You say if I took those words away (If I decided to be separate from You)
Then You couldn’t make things new (Then I wouldn’t be able to hear You make it better for me)
Just by saying I love you (I wouldn’t be able to hear You say “I love you”)

More than words (Oh the existential bliss I feel from Your Peace.)
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da

Now that I’ve tried to talk to You to help me understand (Now that I’ve decided to calm down and connect with you)
All that I have to do is close my eyes (I realize all I have to do is relax)
And just reach out my hands and touch You (and connect with you. You are right there.)
Hold You close don’t ever let You go (When I do this, I feel Your Presence and this is where I feel I belong)
More than words is all I ever needed You to show (Your Peace is all I ever needed)
Then You wouldn’t have to say that You love me (You don’t need to tell me you love me)
‘Cause I’d already know (Because I know Your Peace is enough.)

What would You do if my heart was torn in two (Reminiscing now after having found the solution.)
More than words to show You feel
That Your love for me is real
What would You say if I took those words away
Then You couldn’t make things new
Just by saying I love you

La di da, da di da, di dai dai da (Feeling delight in the joy of knowing Your Peace is enough for me.)
More than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
More than words
La di da, da di da
La di da, da di da, more than words
La di da, da di da, di dai dai da
La di da, da di da, more than words (oh uh uh uh)
More than words
